A thief took a trusting Mayfair watch dealer for a spin on April 19, but police hope that the crook’s time on the lam is about to strike midnight thanks to surveillance video of his crimes.
Detectives last week released footage from a store security camera that shows the thief in action. The unknown man arrived at Henry of Mayfair, 7402 Frankford Ave., at about 12:45 p.m., handed a watch to the owner and asked him to replace the battery. The owner took the watch to his workshop in the back of the store.
Seizing the opportunity, the crook opened a display case, stole a new Citizen watch and fled the store. A short time later, the same thief returned to the store wearing a different set of clothing. He again asked the owner to replace a watch battery. When the owner went to the rear workshop, the thief raided the display case again, grabbing several more Citizen watches. Police described them as ladies’ models. The thief fled again in an unknown direction. He was described as white, 20 years old, about 5 feet 8 inches tall and thin. He had short-cropped light brown hair and initially wore a blue T-shirt, dark pants and dark shoes. On his second visit, the thief wore a red T-shirt, white hat with a “P” logo and black brim, along with tan pants.
